Understanding the FAA’s New MOSAIC Rule

On July 22, 2025, during EAA AirVenture Oshkosh in Wisconsin, the FAA officially unveiled the long-awaited MOSAIC rule, Modernization of Special Airworthiness Certification. This is the biggest regulatory overhaul in the Light-Sport Aircraft (LSA) category since its creation in 2004.

The MOSAIC rule significantly expands what sport pilots can fly and do. By shifting from a weight-based system to performance-based criteria, pilots can now access more powerful and capable aircraft, including models like the Piper Cherokee and Cessna 182,  with proper training and endorsements.
