How to Become a Pilot: A Step-by-Step

Becoming a professional pilot isn’t just a dream, it’s a well-defined path. At Aviator Zone Academy, we guide you through each step with the support, training, and tools you need to succeed. Whether you're starting with no experience or looking to advance your current certification, this guide will walk you through how to become a commercial airline pilot in 2025.

Step 1: Start Your Flight Training

Your aviation career begins with enrolling in a certified flight school. At Aviator Zone Academy, our structured programs are designed to take you from your first flight all the way to your Commercial Pilot License. With campuses in Miami Executive Airport (Tamiami) and North Perry Airport, you’ll be training in a professional environment from day one. Explore Our Locations

Step 2: Earn Your Private Pilot License (PPL)

The Private Pilot License (PPL) is your gateway to flying. It’s the first major milestone for every aspiring aviator. With your PPL, you’ll be able to fly single-engine aircraft and carry passengers—perfect for personal and recreational flying, and the first requirement on your path to the airlines.

At Aviator Zone Academy, our Private Pilot program combines classroom knowledge, simulator practice, and real-world flying to build your confidence and skills. Learn More About the Private Pilot Program

Step 3: Get Your Instrument Rating (IR)

After your PPL, the next step is your Instrument Rating. This allows you to fly in a wider range of weather conditions and under Instrument Flight Rules (IFR). It’s a crucial part of your training that makes you a more competent and professional pilot. Add Your Instrument Rating

Step 4: Earn Your Commercial Pilot License (CPL)

To fly professionally and get paid for flying, you’ll need your Commercial Pilot License (CPL). This license opens the door to career opportunities in aviation, from flight instruction to charter services and more.

At Aviator Zone Academy, our Commercial Pilot training is designed to help you build flight hours, sharpen your skills, and prepare you for a successful career. Become a Commercial Pilot

Step 5: Get Your Multi Engine Add-on (MEL)

Take your training to the next level by earning your Multi-Engine Rating. This advanced certification allows you to fly aircraft with more than one engine — a key step toward becoming a more versatile and competitive pilot.

At Aviator Zone Academy, our Multi-Engine training prepares you to handle the complexities of multi-engine operations with confidence and precision. Learn more about the Multi-Engine Add-On

Step 6: Become a Certified Flight Instructor (CFI)

One of the most common paths to build flight experience and earn income is becoming a Certified Flight Instructor (CFI). Many of our graduates become instructors at Aviator Zone Academy, helping others while logging the hours they need for airline careers. Train to Be a Flight Instructor

Step 7: Meet Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) Requirements

The final step toward the airline cockpit is meeting the requirements for your Airline Transport Pilot Certificate, including reaching the minimum flight hours (typically 1,500) and completing any airline-specific training. Our team will support and guide you toward this final milestone.

What You Need to Start Your Flight Training

To begin your training at Aviator Zone Academy, you must meet the following basic requirements:

  • Be at least 17 years old to obtain a Private Pilot License.
  • Be able to read, speak, write, and understand English.
  • Hold at least a third-class FAA medical certificate.

What Is the Private Pilot Check ride?

The final test to earn your Private Pilot License is called the check ride. This is conducted by an FAA-designated examiner and includes:

  • An oral exam to test your knowledge of aviation regulations, weather, systems, and procedures.
  • A flight test to demonstrate your practical flying skills.

Once you successfully complete the check ride, you’ll officially be a Private Pilot—a title that marks the beginning of your professional aviation journey. Take Your First Step – Discovery Flight
